Areas of Practice

Strategic Patent Procurement, Intellectual Property Counseling/Opinions, Due Diligence Investigation, Intellectual Property Agreements, and Provision of Outsourced In-House IP Counsel Services.

Located in the northern suburb of Portland, Oregon, this practice provides the high quality IP services clients expect from top-tier law firms with the personal attention and cost effectiveness of a skilled single practitioner.  From 1992 to 2002, Mr. Kaplan gained experience at large top-tier IP practices, where he leveraged his graduate training in electrical engineering and computer science by focusing on high technology patents.  Mr. Kaplan began at Fish & Neave (now the Fish & Neave IP Group of Ropes & Gray), where he obtained substantial patent litigation experience before joining, as a partner, other national law firms and specializing in strategic patent prosecution, IP counseling, and IP related agreements.  Prior to starting an independent practice in 2003, Mr. Kaplan was a partner with Howrey Simon Arnold & White.

Mr. Kaplan has substantial experience in the IP issues particular to computer technology and is a recognized expert in the area of integrated circuits.  His broad range of experience includes sophisticated business methods, optical networks, and electronic circuits.  Mr. Kaplan counsels companies in high technology industries, companies using technology in innovative ways and investment firms seeking IP advice or due diligence.  He regularly represents clients on both coasts, ranging in size from startups to industry leaders.  Current clients include leading companies in integrated circuits, financial services and healthcare.

Before earning a law degree from New York University, Mr. Kaplan received a Master's in electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  At MIT, he accomplished research at the Research Laboratory of Electronics and he held a Research Assistant appointment in the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.  As an undergraduate, he was employed in research at Bell Telephone Laboratories and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.  Mr. Kaplan gained industrial experience, in the area of computer chip design, working for an MIT spin-off company.

Mr. Kaplan is an inventor on three patents: two obtained by MIT for his Master's research in the area of integrated circuit design tools and one patent obtained in high school.  He was a national finalist in high school in the Intel (formerly Westinghouse) National Science Talent Search.
